Cardinal Kim [Stephen Kim Souhwan] passed away at 6:12 p.m., on Feb. 16, 2009, without pain," said doctor Chung In-sik. Before he died, Kim repeatedly told doctors and his aides, "Thank you for the love you gave to me." Cardinal Kim, 86, fell into a brief coma early in the morning. When the news reported that Cardinal Kim died at 6:12 p.m. on Feb. 16, 2009, I was so saddened that I felt as if I were temporarily blinded, and my personal memory of those days with the Cardinal flashed through my mind. When his plane arrived at Kimpo international airport in April 1969 from Japan, where he was told of his appointment as Cardinal by the then Pope, I was the first to walk up the tarp to greet him on his arrival. Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan, a great spiritual leader of Korea, passed away from natural causes and pneumonia, at the age of 86, at a hospital in Seoul, on Feb. 15, 2009. Lauded as 'Conscience of Korea,' Kim devoted his life to reaching out for the underprivileged and fighting for social and democratic causes.
